Run. Run and don’t stop. Images of her mother flash in her head, screaming at her, “RUN, CAROLINE, RUN!”
Fire. There was so much fire. It danced from her parent’s hands out to the shadows. The shadows screamed in agony. It was a high pitched scream that made her ears hurt.
But there was more. Her parents… the fire… the shadows… She was scared. “RUN, CAROLINE, RUN!” The line repeats in her head like a song stuck on repeat. “DON’T LOOK BACK, JUST RUN!”
Her parents were protecting her, but also something else… Something as old as time itself. She didn’t know how she knew it, but she just… did.
“RUN, CAROLINE, RUN! “DON’T LOOK BACK, JUST RUN!” Her heart races. “WE’LL FIND YOU! JUST GO!”
Caroline skids to a stop, skinning her knee. There was blood. Her mind went back to her parents. Red stained the walls... the red river made down her mother’s arm. “I love you…” Her mother whispered, her eyes tearing. There was a scream that she knew came from her mother, but Caroline was already half-way down the street.
The fire, she recalled, didn’t look right. It sparkled like the sunset. The fire didn’t come from a match… It came from her parent’s hands… Exploding from their palms like a rocket. It reminded her of a story her parents told her when she was young. A story of a peaceful race. A race that all others feared just because they were different. Maybe… maybe that was the point. “Don’t fear them."
Don’t fear them…
